Veteran photographer Raghu Rai delivers JSJC commencement lecture

August 5th, Sonipat: Indian photographer and photojournalist Raghu Rai arrived at the Performing Art Academy at O P Jindal University on 3rd August for the commencement of the new academic year of the Jindal School of Journalism and Communication. He used his commencement speech to deliver his sense of photography which is as much skill as a spiritual awakening.

The event opened with the Dean, Professor Kishalay Bhattacharjee posing an existential question, ‘How should we all live together?’. Rai, continuing this line of thought talks about spirituality, intuition, and self-reliance as key aspects of human life. Trained as an engineer, photography was not a part of his plan. However, as he got himself into the craft, he said ‘Ever since I have picked up the camera, I have learned so much about the world around me and the guy inside me’. He spoke about his techniques and a few anecdotal stories to help students understand the uniqueness of his art.

When Rai got the opportunity to photograph Mother Teresa, he enthusiastically took as many pictures as he could. To this, Mother Teresa asked him ‘How many times will you click’, he responded, ‘Mother, how many more times will you pray?’. His relentless and often invasive approach to the lens is what makes his work honest and palpable. He reiterates the importance of intuition and seeking truth rather than relying on expensive gear.

Rai believes that the job of the photographer is beyond the act of just capturing the moment but to look beyond the superficial. ‘You don't create moments, you connect with divinity’, he says. Among the crucial events he covered in his career are the Bhopal Gas Tragedy and the Bangladesh War of 1971. He took all risks to see truthfully and bring to people the human essence of these brutalities. He was awarded the 'Padmashree' and the ‘World Press Photo Award’ for his contribution to these tragedies.

After his speech, the event opened to questions from students. Enthralled by the presence of Raghu Rai, many students jumped at the opportunity to get a few words from him. A third-year journalism student, Aravind asked the question about the ethical dilemmas of working with sensitive subjects. ‘Ethics come from your soul, your heart. If you follow your heart, it will bring you closer to the truth’ replied Rai.

He left the hall with the students in complete awe. ‘I was expecting the lecture to go differently and was surprised that it was so focused on spirituality. It was very inspiring, and I feel hopeful for the upcoming academic year.’ says a third-year journalism student, Saara Sethi.
